David Milan a 2009 graduate from SAIT’s Film and Video Production program has become the first winner of the LAUNCH business plan competition – designed to encourage young entrepreneurs who aspire to build a technology, science or knowledge-based business in the Calgary area.

Britton Ledingham, a recent graduate of SAIT’s Photojournalism program, teamed with Joel Kelly to win second prize in the LAUNCH business plan competition. Their business iEvolve is a photography and graphic design business which they hope to expand by creating a stock photo repository that pays more royalties to photographers than existing businesses.

Travis Cullen, a recent graduate of SAIT’s Electrical Engineering Technology program, placed third in the LAUNCH competition. He plans to start a business that will construct motor control centres that reduce hazards posed by arc flash incidents.

The first year of LAUNCH was a big success. Check out the stories about our three winning companies in the panel above. $35,000 in cash was awarded to the top three businesses.  In addition each team received support such a free legal service, corporate identity, entrepreneurship consulting and access to ARIS staff for advice.

LAUNCH is a business plan competition designed to assist SAIT students and alumni in building innovative new companies in the Calgary Region. SAIT alumnus who graduated in 2009/10 and current students who will graduate from a SAIT certificate, diploma, degree or apprenticeship program are eligible to participate and apply for prize money and support to launch their careers as budding entrepreneurs!

All LAUNCH participants receive invaluable mentorship and support in areas such as finance, marketing, operations, research and development to help convert their innovative ideas and business plans into successful start-up companies.

The LAUNCH seminar series will be held over the year to help students and alumni prepare their business plans and for their careers as entrepreneurs. The seminar series is open to all SAIT students and alumni even if they don't plan on participating in LAUNCH.

All LAUNCH participants benefit from the extensive mentoring process involved in the program and have the opportunity to cultivate important business relationships, generate exposure for their business ideas and establish their reputations as aspiring entrepreneurs.
